EU deletes MRLs for Benomyl, Carbendazim and Thiophanate-methyl

On July 9th 2026, the European Union published Commission Regulation (EU) 2026/1546, amending maximum residue levels (EU MRLs) for benomyl, carbendazim and thiophanate-methyl. These active substances are no longer approved for use in the EU, and the new regulation lowers their MRLs to the applicable limits of quantification (LOQ) across food and feed commodities. The regulation also introduces separate residue definitions for benomyl and carbendazim.
What does this mean for exporters?
Producers and exporters supplying the EU market should review residue monitoring programs and verify compliance, as even very low residue findings may now exceed the new legal limits. The changes for grapefruits and oranges apply from July 29th 2026, while the remaining amended MRLs will take effect on January 29th 2027. Stakeholders exporting to both the EU and Great Britain should also check the requirements for each market, as timelines and MRL values may differ.
Great Britain MRL amendments
On June 15th 2026, Great Britain’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) adopted the following MRL amendments:
- New GB MRLs for mefentrifluconazole in wine- and table grapes, which increased from 0.9 to 1.5 mg/kg, taking effect on June 15th 2026.
- New GB MRLs for dithianon that will take effect on December 14th 2026. Key changes include:
